Two students mugged by visiting basketball team at Philly trade school
A scuffle on the court during a basketball scrimmage at The Williamson Free School of Mechanical Trades may have spilled over to the campus, resulting in robbery charges against two members of a visiting team and one of their friends.
Marcus Steven Glover, 21, Ajen Jazper English, 19, and Juawaun Xavier Smith, 18, all of Middletown, Del., allegedly intimated they were armed with a handgun as they demanded money from two Williamson students and the son of a school maintenance worker they encountered while riding around the campus last week, according to Pennsylvania State Police.
There were no reported injuries in the Oct. 24 incident.
Glover and English were among players from the Sam Rines/ Rise Basketball Academy on the South New Middletown Road campus that evening to take on the Williamson men’s basketball team in a scrimmage, both Sam Rines Jr. and James Hannigan, vice president of plans and operations at Williamson, said Wednesday.
Though the visiting players typically arrive together, Glover and English arrived separate from the team and were accompanied by their friend, Smith, said Hannigan, noting that he had just finished an internal report on the incident.
It was toward the end of the exhibition game that “pushing and shoving” occurred, actions that involved both Glover and English, according to Hannigan.
“The coaches stopped the scrimmage,” he said.
Despite the call, the environment at that point was not tense, according to Hannigan.
“Nobody rushed to leave,” he said.
Rines was in the gym but wasn’t aware of any post-match problems with a pair of his players until he received a call from their parents at about 9:30 p.m.
“I was there, but I wasn’t coaching,” he said.
According to documents, state police were dispatched at 9:07 p.m. to the school, on a report of an armed robbery. On arrival, Trooper John E. Hanosek interviewed three victims.
